Real to Reel Feature Film "By Hand" @ The SCA | $25 includes Afterparty

Midwest Premiere of By Hand, a feature length adventure documentary film about twin brothers that paddled 2,200 miles from Alaska to Mexico.

In an attempt to escape comfort, reconnect to the natural world and set a new bar for ocean adventure, twin brothers Casey and Ryan Higginbotham made a decision that would reshape their lives. On March 18th, 2016 they embarked on their expedition with 18′ paddle boards. The brothers carried nothing more than two dry bags of gear each and a camera. No support boats, no paddles, and nothing similar to gauge from. Nothing like this has ever been done.

Meet Casey, Ryan and director Kellen Keene as they  introduce the film and set the stage for Saturday’s Director Conversation.

Presented by The Saugatuck Center for the Arts as part of the Real to Reel film series.

"Equity" Playlist @ the History Center | $12

Our morning playlist at the Saugatuck-Douglas History Center will feature Moutainfilm’s annual festival theme: Equity. As the Mountainfilm director explains, “Equity goes beyond equality. Whereas equality means treating everyone the same, equity acknowledges that equality isn’t always fair because not everyone is coming from the same starting point. Equity is about policies and practices that are just for all. And in today’s charged climate, equity is at the root of many systemic problems we are facing as a global society — from the gender pay gap to voting rights, race relations and accessibility to a quality education, healthcare and even nature.”

Keene (National Geographic, Patagonia, Yeti) talks about the hurdles he had to overcome to authentically capture the journey over 8 months and 2,200 miles in the water and shares exclusive background stories and footage.

The brothers will be available to autograph copies of their coffee table book documenting the expedition and including never before seen photos, journal entries, maps and more.
